You don’t necessarily need a massive, dealer-installed solar package to boondock comfortably.
After years of off-grid camping, I’ve learned that matching your system to your actual power usage matters far more than simply adding more panels.
For many RVers who don’t run air conditioning, a system in the range of:
• 300–500 watts of solar
• 200–400 amp-hours of lithium battery capacity
• A quality MPPT charge controller
• A properly sized pure sine inverter
can provide several days of autonomy in decent sun conditions.
The key isn’t copying someone else’s setup. It’s:
• Measuring your real daily amp-hour usage
• Understanding seasonal solar production in the areas you travel
• Designing around your biggest loads (fridge, furnace fan, inverter use)
• Prioritizing installation quality and proper wiring
Larger systems provide more margin, but many RVers discover they can meet their needs with less equipment than dealers suggest.
Solar isn’t about chasing the biggest numbers – it’s about building a system that fits your lifestyle.
